Mary did not understand such sentence as “She is blue today.” “You are yellow.” “He has a green Thumb(大拇指)” “He has told a Little white lie.” And so on.And she went to her teacher for Help.
Mary :Mrs.Smith,there is a colour in each of these sentences.What do they mean?
Mrs.Smith :In everyday English,Mary,blue sometimes means sad.Yellow means afraid.A person with a green thumb grows plants(植物) well.And a white lie is not a bad one.
Mary :Would you give me an example for “ a white lie”?
Mrs Smith :Certainly.Now I give you some cakes.In fact you don’t like it,but you won’t say it.
Instead,you say,“No,thanks ,I’m not hungry.” That’s a white lie.
Mary :Oh,I see,Thank you very much.

Kate left school when she was seventeen years old and went to look for work.She was still living with her parents.
A lot of factories needed workers,so it was not hard to find an interesting job(工作).Kate went to several factories and then chose(選擇) one of them.It was near her home.She decided(決定) to go to work on foot.
The next morning,she went to the factory again and said to the manager(經(jīng)理),“I want to work here,but how much will you give me?”
“Will pay for(付款) 27 pounds now.” the manager answered,“and 30 pounds after three months.”
Kate thought for a few seconds before she answered.The she said,“All right,then I’ll start in three months.”
