2 Transverse impact of spherical projectile onto clamped fabric
Single plies of rectangular fabric strips were ¯rmly clamped along two opposite edges and shot with spherical steel projectiles.The fabric used in the impact test is plain-woven Hexcel-Schwebel high performance fabric style 706.It is a neat plain-woven Kevlar KM2°R fabric with 600 denier yarns (the yarn linear density is therefore 0.067 g/m).The fabric thickness is 0.236 mm
and area density is 180 g/m2.There are 34 yarns per inch in the fabric for both the warp direction and the weft direction.Rectangular fabric specimens have a dimension of 50.8 mm £ 92.3 mm.The two shorter edges of the fabric specimens were clamped between a pair of rigid aluminum frames.Asshow in Fig.1 (a),the aluminum frame has a square geometry with a 152
mm outer dimension and a 50.8 mm inner opening.The clamping faces of the aluminum frames were knurled so that the fabric specimen can be effectively clamped,with no or little slippage during impact.The two shorter edges of the rectangular fabric specimen were evenly put between the pair of aluminum frames and then tightly clamped with eight pairs of bolt and nut assemblies leaving a square impact area of 50.8 mm.The assembled aluminum frames were mounted using two heavy bolts in the gas gun range
as shown in Fig.1 (b),and got ready for the impact test.
