Swots, Bookworms and Nerds
Swots, bookworms, and nerds are all terms for students who spend most of their time with their noses stuck in their schoolbooks. They are called swots in Britain, nerds in America, and bookworms in both places. All that reading and studying may get them good grades but they aren’t usually the most admired kids in school. In fact they are often made fun of*: being called a swot, a bookworm, or a nerd is not a good thing.
Two kinds of bookworms
There are usually two kinds of bookworms in school. There is the arrogant bookworm who thinks he is better than everyone else and uses his top marks to prove it. And then there is the shy bookworm who is uncomfortable talking to people and feels more comfortable and safe when reading a book.
No man is an island
Being a bookworm is okay (and we shouldn’t make fun of anyone!), but getting good grades is only one part of being a successful student. There are so many other things to learn in school that are outside* the covers of a book. The first thing is how to get along with* others. There is a famous English saying,“No man is an island*.”It means that each of us belongs to* society.
Close your books
So, how do you become a successful student and part of society? Well, first of all, you have to close your books once in a while. Then you can begin by sharing the knowledge you’ve learned with other students: they will appreciate your help. You can also join in school activities: sports, drama clubs, English clubs, etc. And you can volunteer in your community.
None of these things will improve your grades but they will make you a better student and a better person. And no-one will call you a swot, a bookworm, or a nerd. They will think you are the ideal student: hardworking, clever and ... nice!
