In 1987,Mottola was chosen to run CBS Records at the age of 37.
During his tenure,he transformed Sony into one of the most successful global music companies,expanding its businesses into over 60 countries,while creating one of the strongest management teams in the industry.He revitalized Sony Music's publishing division by making such acquisitions as the Beatles catalogue and enabled Sony to become the first major music company to make available commercial digital downloads.He is widely well-known for signing,developing,and nurturing the careers of Mariah Carey,Celine Dion,Destiny's Child/Beyoncé,Jennifer Lopez,Shakira,Gloria Estefan,Dixie Chicks,Marc Anthony,Barbra Streisand,Bruce Springsteen,Billy Joel,among others.In the early 90's Mottola was forced to resign after allegations he paid out large sums of money to get not only Carey's music played,but the music of his other artists as well.
Mottola later went on to date other stars before dating Latin singer Thalía,whom he married in December 2000.They have a daughter together,Sabrina Sakaë[3].He is credited with creating the Latin Explosion in popular music by championing such Sony artists as Marc Anthony,Ricky Martin,Jennifer Lopez,Shakira,and YouTube celebrity Mia Rose.Additionally Mottola was the architect for some of Sony's biggest global brands,including Mariah Carey and Celine Dion.During his 15 year tenure,Mottola built Sony up from a company with revenues of 800 million dollars a year to one with over 6 billion dollars of annual revenue by the year 2000.
Michael Jackson was waiting for the licenses to the masters of his albums to revert to him; this allowed him to promote his old material how he liked and prevented Sony from getting a cut of the profit.Jackson expected this to occur early in the new millennium; however,due to various clauses in the contract,this revert date was still many years away.Jackson began an investigation,and it emerged that the attorney who represented the singer in the deal was also representing Sony,creating a conflict of interest.
For a number of years,Sony had been pushing to buy all of Jackson's share in their music catalog venture.If Jackson's career or financial situation were to deteriorate,he would have to sell his catalog.Thus,Sony had something to gain from Jackson's career failing.Jackson was able to use these conflicts as leverage to exit his contract early.Just before the release of Invincible,Jackson informed the head of Sony Music Entertainment,Tommy Mottola,that he was leaving Sony.As a result,all singles releases,video shootings and promotions were either cancelled or never conceived".Sony disputed claims that they had failed to promote Invincible with sufficient energy,maintaining that Jackson refused to tour in the US.
