Question:
In some countries people who have high incomes pay very high taxes. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this for individuals and for the country as a whole?
Answer:
It is not uncommon that in a number of regions, such as America and Australia, individuals who receive remarkable remunerations, normally pay higher taxes than other ordinaries. This essay will attempt to discuss the possible benefits and drawbacks and then express my opinions.
Finance for social welfare is important. It is needed to maintain public facilities such as hospitals and it requires an astronomical budget balancing act from any government. However, authorities in certain national governments suffer from a lack of funds. As a result, they do not allocate sufficient supports to their social welfare system. For instance, due to the financial crisis, the South Africa government spends very little money on Aids, education or medical programs. Introducing a new tax could be one way to channel money into the social welfare system because one cannot extract blood from a stone. It would be better to tax international corporations or billionaires of this world to achieve a more equitable distribution of wealth for cultural and social purposes.
Conversely, such tax legislation might result in the lack of motivation among elites. Since the more one earns, means the more tax he/she will pay. Hence, a number of professionals might lose their career motivation. Those experts, either employees or employers, are needed by the world to progress humanity by expanding their businesses. However, the salaries they receive after tax might be equal to those of other people. This might make some of them feel that their efforts are meaningless. Consequently, a number of them may never start to work and the rest of society does not gain any tax from those who opt not to work.
To sum up, based on the old Robin Hood idea ‘take from the rich and give to the poor’, one could be of the opinion that collecting more taxes from high income groups may give more funds to governments to use in the social welfare system. On the other hand, it may also fuel the loss of motivation in workplaces. To navigate a balancing point between them should be a priority task for governments to work out.
