At the scale of individual cities,tourism pro-motion now is a critical driver for local econ-omic development planning in South Africa (Nel & Rogerson 2005; Rogerson 2006; Roger-son & Visser 2007; Rogerson & Rogerson 2010).Several dimensions of the invention and pro-motion of South African cities as tourist destinations are strikingly similar to those occurring in North American or Western European cities.The most visible manifestations of tourism pro-motion are the waterfront redevelopments and flagship leisure projects that have transformed and regenerated large spaces of inner-city Durban and Cape Town (Maharaj et al.2006; Ferreira & Visser 2007).Currently,the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront in Cape Town is the single most visited attraction for long haul international tourists to South Africa (South African Tourism 2010).The promotion of busi-ness tourism also has followed international trends with construction of new convention centres in Johannesburg,Cape Town and Durban and the hosting of major international conferences such as the World AIDS Congress and the World Summit on Sustainable Devel-opment (Rogerson 2002; Cornelissen 2006).
