In the Song Dynasty,as the broadened gap in the social stratification,people were more eager in theirpursuit in elegance.its garden theory required a more refined garden art.The layout for the landscape,the woods,the stones,and the paths should contain certain emotions and be more enjoyable.Each item in the garden bearing certain connotations,the garden art thus developed from figure images to emotional conception[6].
The theory of man in harmony with nature was still inherited in the garden art of the Yuan,Ming,and Qing periods.This period witnessed the boom of gardening.Private gardens of various styles sprout out in Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces.It became a fad for literatis to participate in gardening.It was not rare to see craftsmen skillful in literature,drawing and gardening,such as Jicheng in the late Ming Dynasty and Zhang Nanheng during the interim of the Ming and Qing,just to name a few.These craftsmen also compose their understanding into theory on their practice of gardening.In Jicheng’s “Gardening” and Wen Zhenheng’s “Erudition”,they interpreted their ideal of gardening as “make an artistic world in a tiny place as if it were natural”.
From the above we can see that the philosophy of man in harmony with nature remains the heart in
development the Chinese traditional garden art.With its unique image and cultural connotation,Chinese traditional gardening boasts to be the mother of world gardens.
