1．the number of表示“……的數(shù)量”,跟復(fù)數(shù)名詞連用作主語時(shí),中心詞是number,謂語動(dòng)詞要用單數(shù).例如：
The number of students in our class is50．我們班學(xué)生的數(shù)量是50人.
The number of pages in this book is 60．這本書有60頁(yè).
2．a(chǎn) number of表示“許多”,相當(dāng)于 many,修飾可數(shù)名詞復(fù)數(shù).作主語時(shí),謂語動(dòng)詞用復(fù)數(shù).number前可用large,small等修飾,以表示程度.例如：
A number of students are planting trees on the hill．許多學(xué)生在小山上植樹.
