    The decline of Abstract Expressionism
Movements in art come and go.Just as Abstract Expressionism became the most important movement in American art in the 1950s,so other movements such as Pop Art took over in the 1960s.Yet the work of Abstract Expressionist artists continue to be appreciated by art lovers in today’s ever-changing world.
    Changing tastes
It is tricky to say exactly when Abstract Expressionism started to decline.By the late 1950s fewer new artists were becoming well-known for making expressive, gestural art. Some of the most famous Abstract Expressionist artists died at this time, including Jackson Pollock in 1956 and Franz Kline in 1962.By the early 1960s even painters such as Mark Rothko and Willem de Kooning were finding it more difficult to show their new work, because galleries no longer considered them avant-grade.
In 1962 the Sidney Janis Gallery in New York marked the changing tastes in art with an exhibition called The New Realists. This included work by young American artists such as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, who used images and styles from advertising posters and comics. They believe that the subjects used by Abstract Expressionists were too obscure for normal people to be able to relate to their work. The “new realist” work was,in fact, the beginning of Pop Art,which ruled the American art world for the rest of the 1960s.Pop artists wanted to make art that expressed noting about themselves, but instead showed the world around them..
