不必糾結(jié).把你的句子分成兩句就容易理解了：

2 You thought of the way TO take care of the garden.
再把這兩句合并起來,把2中的the way TO take care of the garden省略,用that替換,放在1 的way後面,再把2的剩下部分寫在後面,如下：
