person是個體名詞,它泛指man,woman或child中的任何一個,其復(fù)數(shù)形式是persons,但人們習(xí)慣用 people代替persons.“一個人”常譯作a person,而需要說明一個人的性別時,要用a man 或 a woman來表示.如:
Who is the youngest person in your class?你們班里年齡最小的人是誰?
people作“人”講時,是集合名詞,表復(fù)數(shù)概念.說“一個人”時,不用people.當(dāng)表示兩個以上的人時,可用people.如：twenty people二十個人.people作“民族”解時,有單、復(fù)數(shù)之分.如：a people一個民族.There are 56 peoples in China.中國有56個民族.
傳統(tǒng)上,man 以及它的衍生字一般是用來指任何人或整個人類,不考慮性別,可以用來代替person 和people.如：Men have lived here for thousands of years.人們在這兒已經(jīng)生活幾千年了.隨著現(xiàn)代社會的發(fā)展,man 更多地表“男人”,如：A tone of menace entered into the man's voice.這個男人的聲音里帶有威脅的口氣.
