School:One illustration of the difference between collectivist and individualist cultures can be found in the way schools are organized.For example,in Chinese secondary schools and even universities,students generally function as a group.They are organized into class groups(ban),and all studentx in the same class group have the same courses together.In contrast,American high school and university students are expected to function as indiveduals They generally choose at least some courses according to their own interests,and as a result they generally have different classmates in different courses.They have no class group quite like a Chinese "ban".

Parties:serve as another illustration of this collectivist individualist difference.For example,Chinese parties often have a group focus,either a shared meal or a set of performances that everyone watches and in which many participate.in contrast one very typical kind of party in America is a cocktail party in which people chat together in pairs or small groups ,changing conversation partners many times during the during the course of the evening.It is hard to say for sure which of these two technicians a western manager would fire ,but it is probably safe to say that Bob has a much better chance of keeping hic job in an individualist Western culture than he would in a collectivist one .One reason is that a Western manager would feel more pressure to base the decision mainly on objective "public" criteria,such as Bob’s MA degree.A second reason is that everyone involved--the manager ,john ,and even the manager’s superiors --would assume that it would not be right for the manager’s personal friendship with John to affect her decision very much ; in fact she might even expect John not to "take it personally” if she decided to fire him rather than Bob.Finally personal consideration(what Chinese might call renqingwei) would be considered private matters rather than public,so even though there would be sympathy for John’s family situation it would be hard to use that situation to justify a decision to let him deep his job .

Of course ,personal relationships do make a difference in bow people the West treat each other ,even in public settings .However,the wall between public and private life tends to be somewhat higher in the individualism West than it is in collectivist cultures.
