THE FUTURE
The future is already here — electronic publishing
is the heart and soul of the communication
industry.The press is an Òexecutive organÓ,one
output technology among several — one of the
most important from an economic and quality
point of view,but also quite a complex one.How-
ever the user notices less and less of this,thanks
to the use of intelligent automation.Presses are
becoming capable of learning and correcting
themselves based on a list of job specifications.
The day of Òoffset printing at the press of a
buttonÓ is growing ever nearer.The profession
of printer,today more of a data manager than
a skilled worker,is enhanced with a more in-
teresting workplace with good prospects for
the future.
From another point of view,the printing
industry does not serve presses,it serves cus-
tomers.The printer is a service provider with
specific means of production.
