The Aral Sea is a large lake in Central Asia.there are two large rivers that give water to the lake .Around 1960 .farmers started to take water from the rivers to ues it on their farms .This happened for a long time but nobpdy saw that there was a danger ,Then .during the 1980s ,very little water -or sometimes no water at all-reached the Aral Sea.In 1988.the lake separated into the Large Aral Sea and the Small Aral Sea.Over the yeara a lot of the lake disppeared,But still the government did nothing.The water became very salyt and this was not good fof laant amimal life.Now the water of the Aral Sea is no longer clear .There are no more fish .Fishermen who wroked on the lake cannot work any more ,There were many towns at the side of the lake before 1960.Now these towns are many miles from the water .There isn't anything there -just old fishing biats lying on the sand.More than 17,700 square mailes are now a wasterland of sand and salt .The wind lifts up the salt and the dust and there are terrible dust storms,Everybody complanins about these conditions.In the 1990s,the Aral Sea continued to get smaller.Then ,in 1994,five countries around the Aral Sea agreed to do something to stop the problem .They agreed to use less water for farming.
