一、Not only … but also屬于連詞,連詞的作用就是“用來連接屬于同類項的語法成分”.

1、連接賓語

I like not only (apples) but also (bananas).我不但喜歡蘋果而且喜歡香蕉.
He has not only (experience) but also (knowledge). 他不但有經(jīng)驗,而且還有知識.
He is not only kindness but also munificence. 他天生既仁慈又寬宏大量.

連接主語

Not only (you) but (he) is wrong. 不僅你不對,他也不對.
Not only you but also Mary likes this game. 不僅你,而且瑪麗也喜歡這個游戲.
Not only he but also all his family are keen on concerts. 不僅僅是他.而且是他全家人都很熱衷于音樂會.

連接表語

It is not only (beautiful), but also (practical). 既美觀,又實用
The story is not only (interesting) but also (helpful). 這個故事不僅有趣,而且有益.
He is not only (handsome) but also (rich). 他不但英俊而且有錢.

連接附加成分（定語或狀語）

It is not only an (interesting) but also (helpful) story. 那不僅是個有趣的故事而且還是個有益的故事.
He works not only hard but alsodiligently. 他不但努力工作而且還勤奮.

連接謂語

He not only promised, but performed. 他不僅許下諾言, 而且做到了.
Not only did, but well done. 精益求精.
This article not only (describes…) but also (suggests…). 本文首先描述了…,然后提出…

二、如果把上述句子中but also前后都擴展成帶有謂語動詞的部分,就會變成連接兩個謂語部分.如：

I (like not only apples) but also (like bananas).
Not only (are you wrong) but also (he is wrong).
The story (is not only interesting) but also (is helpful).
He not only (works hard) but also (works diligently).

上面改寫過的四個句子盡管在語法上沒有毛病,但是它們的謂語動詞都是重復的,不符合節(jié)省筆墨的原則,最好還是省略后面的重復部分,改為——

I like not only apples but also bananas.
Not only are you wrong but also he is.
The story is not only interesting but also helpful.
He not only works hard but also diligently.

三、如果把not only連接的部分置于句首,就需要用部分倒裝語序.部分倒裝僅指把主語和謂語動詞的系動詞、助動詞或情態(tài)動詞顛倒位置,而不能把動詞提前.如：

Not only apples (do I like) but also bananas.
Not only (are you) wrong but also he is.
Not only (is the story) interesting but also helpful.
Not only (does he work) hard but also diligently.
Not only (have the students been seated) but also the teacher has come for the meeting.僅學生已經(jīng)就座,而且老師也已經(jīng)到會..
Not only (can you attend) the party yourself but also come with your brother. 不僅你可以參加聚會,還可以帶上你的弟弟.
