on he went,boots or no boots.he soon came to a place where two roads met.one ran one way and one ran the other.pat started down one of the roads.then he said to himself,"stop!this is not the road to take.i must take the other road.it was on my right side going to town.how can it be on my left side going back?"
so pat went back and took the other road.it was almost dark.the road ran by the river and into the woods.it was a very nice road to take by day,but it was no liaces to be after the sun had gone down.people said that you could see some very queer things along this road at night.in all the long time pat been going to town and back,he had never been on this road at night.
pat went along as fast as he could.and you may be sure that he did not think about his boots now.he started to sing to himself.then he began to talk to himself,"i'm not afraid,"he said."i will soon be into the woods and soon be out of them."
then before he knew it,the moon was up,and it was almost as light as day."that is very queer,"said pat to himself."first it is as dark as night,and then it is almost as light as day."
just then pat's eyes opened in wonder.there by the river the fairies were dancing.pat looked and looked at them.he had never seen anything like it.he couldn't keep his feet still,for he liked to dance.the fairies went faster and faster,and pat was dancing,too.
then pat looked down at his feet and saw his boots."stop!"he said.
"i must not do this.i shall wear my boots right out."
so pat stopped dancing.but the fairies had heard him,and before he could take off his boots,one of them was right in front of him.the fairy was a queer little fellow with a black hat and red shoes and a green coat with long tails.
"come and dance with us,"said the fairy.
"thank you,"said pat,"but i must take off my boots and go home."
"very nice shoes,"said the fairy."let me clean them for you."
in no time the fairy rubbed pat's shoes with the tails of his green coat.then all the fairies laughed and started to dance again.pat laughed and started to dance,too.
