The modern thought of sustainable development has,actually,stemmed from people’s growing understanding of and their deep concern about environmental problems.In fact,a variety of views and ideas on sustainable development have also been embodied in the principles,doctrines and practices of Taoism.The Taoist idea of “cherishing human beings and treasuring life” does not,however,entail (把……給以) upon men the privilege to put themselves above nature.Instead,it requires mankind to live in harmony with nature,under the principle that man is an integral (組成的) part of nature.To grasp such a dialectical relationship is of crucial importance in today’s drive to achieve a sustainable development.
