1) calm 指天氣、海洋的“風(fēng)平浪靜”,還可指人的心情“平靜”、態(tài)度“安詳”,“沉著鎮(zhèn)定”;指自然“無風(fēng)無浪的”.例如:
He remained calm.
After the storm the sea was calm again.
The sea was very calm.海面很平靜.
The doctor did what he could to make the girl calm.醫(yī)生盡力讓那女孩平靜下來.
2) quiet 側(cè)重指由于無騷擾而產(chǎn)生的“安靜的”、“寧靜的”;“無動(dòng)靜,無聲響”,或心里沒有煩惱、焦慮;用于自然環(huán)境時(shí),指沒有干擾活動(dòng)、沒有喧鬧聲的寂靜狀態(tài).例如:
Everything was quiet.
Keep quiet.
Ask them to be quiet.讓他們保持安靜.
They lived a quiet life in the countryside.他們?cè)卩l(xiāng)村過著寧靜的生活.
3)silent用于事物時(shí),側(cè)重沒有聲響;有時(shí)用于指人時(shí),強(qiáng)調(diào)少言寡語.例如:
That's a silent film.
Why do you keep silent.
You'd better be silent about what's happened.對(duì)已經(jīng)發(fā)生的事,你最好保持沉默.
The children went out,and the room was silent.孩子們都出去了,房子變得寂靜無聲.
4)still側(cè)重于"不動(dòng)"、"靜止"時(shí),與calm,quiet,silent不能替換;側(cè)重于"無聲"時(shí),可與quiet替換.例如:
Please keep still while I take a photo of you.
How still(quiet)everything is!
All sounds are still.萬籟俱寂.
The Swede stood quite still,except that his lips moved slightly.那個(gè)瑞典人紋絲不動(dòng)地站著,只有嘴唇在微微動(dòng)著.
