Twenty years later L.S.B.Leakey(who died in 1972)published his Olduvai Gorge which summarised work up to 1947.In1972 Richard Leakey announced the finding of many Australopithecines in East Rudolf and of the skull of a member of the genus Homo earlier than 2.6 million years ago.In Africa the early stages of man's physical and cultural evolution seem now well attested and Charles Darwin's dictum that Africa was probably the cradle of mankind a very shrewd guess.
