China is about to start the world's first clinical trials of a vaccine against SARS. But other scientists fear the Chinese might be moving too fast.
Previous research with coronaviruses similar to SARS raises fears that the vaccine now being tested could actually make SARS worse, due to an effect called immune enhancement.
The Chinese government news agency Xinhua announced on Saturday that human trials of a SARS vaccine would start before the end of December. Yin Hongzhang of the State Food and Drug Administration said the vaccine protects monkeys from the disease.
The vaccine was developed by the Beijing laboratory of Sinovac, a Chinese biotech company, and is made of whole, killed virus. The strain was certified safe for human use by the Chinese FDA in October.
Sinovac spokesmen said on Tuesday that people are already volunteering for the trials. It says it will discuss its test methods with the World Health Organization, which has called for "fast-track" testing for SARS vaccines.
"I hope the Chinese scientists have investigated this issue," says Michael Lai, vice president of Taiwan's Academia Sinica, who is coordinating Taiwan's effort to develop SARS vaccines. "Without such knowledge it is dangerous to conduct large-scale clinical trials."
