Single model – multiple analyses
There is a multitude of software tools to carry
out the various analyses which are necessary
during a product life cycle: e.g. simulation,
risk analyses, monitoring or diagnostics. Each
time, a model of the system has to be build to
fit the respective tool and its specific purpose.
Often, the necessary design data are not
available, or must be obtained from another
department in the company.
The simulation and analysis tool RODON
follows a unified approach: based on a single
virtual product model, it offers a great variety
of analyses. Ideally, the product model is built
during system development time by the
engineering department of a company, and is
continually updated and used for the analyses
mentioned earlier, accompanying the product
through its life cycle. Figure 1 shows the range
of tasks in which the tool can support the
engineer.
Object-orientedmodeling
But how can those product models be built?
In RODON, there are basically three
modeling modes which differ widely in their
degree of automation.
. The model topology can be imported
automatically from E-CAD data, where
component models are chosen from
existing libraries.
. A model can be assembled graphically
using existing model libraries.
. A model can be built from scratch using
the object-oriented modeling language
Rodelica.
In practice, these modeling approaches are
combined most of the time: often the main
structure of a model is imported from an
E-CAD tool, while some parts can be built
re-using library components, and
company-specific parts have to be modeled by
the engineer himself. All models are organized
in hierarchical libraries which can be extended
continually by adding new models.
