不用,did nothing but do sth
nothing but（除……而外；什么也沒有；只有）后面可接(1) 名詞或代詞：
For miles and miles I could see nothing except (= but) a great fire and lots of smoke.一連好幾英里,除了大火和濃煙我什么也看不見.
Under the soil there is nothing but sand.在這層土壤下邊只有沙子.
（2）不定式：A cold-blooded animal has no choice but to lie down and sleep.冷血動物別無選擇,只好躺下來睡覺.（注：這種句型中的不定式通常要帶to；但當其前面的動詞是do,或只有情態(tài)動詞時,but后面的不定式要省去to.例如：
He did nothing but sleep all day long.他什么也不干,成天睡覺.
I can but obey it.（= I can do nothing but obey it.）我只能服從.

Politeness costs nothing but wins everything.這是一句諺語,意為彬彬有禮,惠而不費,或者理解為和氣生財.
