The Spring Festival is celebrated by Chinese once a year,the exact date varying according to the lunar calendar,but always falling between mid January and mid February.The Spring Festival is one of the most important traditional festivals for Chinese people.The festival originated from the activities of offering sacrifices to gods or ancestors at the end of the year in the Yin and Shang dynasties.Chinese today celebrate the Chinese New Year with family gatherings and dinners.The most important dinner is the traditional Chinese New Year eve dinner where a feast of delicacies are prepared and eaten.Houses are cleaned for the event and red trimmings are placed on doorways and windows.Red packets filled with money are given by elders to unmarried children and adults during the 15 day celebration and are supposed to bring luck.Families will visit their relatives and friends,bringing greetings from place to place; children who tag along get given red packet from each family.Watching the Spring Festival Gala Evening is a relatively new custom.For Chinese people,sitting together watching the show can bring laughter and happiness to the coming year.
