The Differences Between Traditional Sources and the Internet
Since the science and technology is becoming more and more developed,a new way for information research has been accepted by many people,while it is also challenging the status of traditional sources---that is the Internet.Although both of traditional sources and the Internet are used for information research,they still have a lot of differences.
Firstly,traditional sources for information research such as libraries and bookstores,provide people a large number of authoritative books,which could be quoted as a proofs in articles.Encyclopedia,for example,which is found in a library,is one of the most authoritative books acknowledged by people.When someone uses the reference from encyclopedia to his essay,the readers will think the essay more persuasive.The same goes for some dictionaries like Longman Dictionary.Hardly could people be able to change the content in these books.
However,the Internet for information research is not that authoritative.Now almost everyone is free to open one’s own website or blog,in which they could type the information created by them,that is to say whether the information is true is a question.Sometimes,the false information even leads to tragedies.For example,recently a famous Korean actress died from false information because she could not bear the depression.In this point,how can people trust in the information from the Internet completely?
Secondly,using the Internet for information research is always regarded as a fast,easy and completed way,for the information that is found could from all over the world.However,there will be fairly anonymous information.Although people have so much to choose from,it is still necessary to develop skills to evaluate the information and usually this process wastes a long time.People who have searched the Google Website for information must have experienced that after typing in the keywords they are searching for,millions of related information will turn out in less than one second!People could not tell apart the useful ones and the useless ones,so the next step to evaluate them is a serious task.
On the contrary,traditional sources,which seem to be slow and hard when researching information,are faster in fact.Because of the two developed classification systems---the Dewey Decimal System and the Universal Decimal Classification,people could find books easily,so that they could find the information fast.It is said that in Tianyige(天一閣) ,Ningbo Province,people type in the name or content of the book in the computer and then the most related book will be conveyed automatically for people to borrow.How fast and convenient it is by using traditional sources!
Finally,there are still advantages of using the Internet for information research.Both colorful pictures and funny content can be found on the Internet,which attract people’s attention,thus they will be interested in the Internet.Conversely,people are losing interest in traditional sources,especially books,because “all words and no funny points make book a dull thing.” It seems that only the scholars and senior citizens prefer traditional sources to the Internet.What’s more,in environmentally friendly aspect,the information on the Internet not only save paper resources,but also is easy to keep for long time.However,publishing books consume large amounts of paper and ink,while the books are hard to be kept as time passing by.
