Asian carp could return to native China -- as food
The state of Illinois said today it will work with a Chinese meat company
to harvest and pack Asian carp to send back to their native China as a
delicacy.
Big River Fisheries will harvest 30 million pounds of carp by the end of
2011.The company will then process,package and ship the fish.They will
sell internationally to Beijing Zhuochen Company.
By harvesting them,it will reduce the number of fish that could get past
the electric barriers.The harvesting will be in the Illinois River before
the fish reach the barriers.If not,they could destroy the electric
plants.A bighead Asian carp was found in Lake Calumet June 22 by
commercial fishermen when they were hunting for fishes past the electric
barriers.People are continuing efforts to find more bighead and silver
carp near Lake Michigan.
“The high quality and taste of the wild Asian carp far exceeded our
expectations,said Mr.Liang Chang,chairman of Beijing Zhuochen in a
statement.“We see a tremendous market in China for the wild Asian carp.”
Some U.S.chefs say people in US restaurants sell them on menus and they
are tasty.
