原形.
1.too...to結(jié)構(gòu)通常表示否定意義,意思是"太……不能","太……不會(huì)".
eg.It's too early for us to go yet.現(xiàn)在太早了,我們不會(huì)去的.
1.too...to結(jié)構(gòu)相當(dāng)于so...that...not.
eg.It is too late for us to catch the train.→It is so late that we can not catch the train.太晚了,我們趕不上火車了.
2.有時(shí)候,當(dāng)too...to do結(jié)構(gòu)中的do既可作及物動(dòng)詞,又可作不及物動(dòng)詞時(shí),含有too...to結(jié)構(gòu)的句子往往產(chǎn)生歧義
eg.Tom is too selfish to help.→Tom is too selfish to help others.湯姆太自私了,不會(huì)幫助別人.→Tom is too selfish to be helped by others.湯姆太自私了,別人不會(huì)幫助他.
3.too...for也表示否定意義,相當(dāng)于too...to,意為"太……不適合(不能)".例如:
He is too young for the work.=He is too young to do the work.他太年輕,不適合這份工作.
It's too cold outside for jogging.=It's too cold outside to go jogging.外面太冷了,不能去跑步.
二、too...to結(jié)構(gòu)并不一定都表示否定意義,遇到下面幾種情況時(shí),too...to結(jié)構(gòu)表示肯定意義.
1.當(dāng)too前面有only,all,not,but,never,simply,just等詞時(shí),too...to結(jié)構(gòu)表示肯定意義.例如:
I am only too pleased to see you.非常高興見(jiàn)到你.
You know but too well to hold your tongue.你深知少說(shuō)為妙.
2.當(dāng)too后面是 eager,anxious,pleased,kind,willing,inclined,ready,glad,quick等詞時(shí),too...to結(jié)構(gòu)表示肯定意義.例如:
I am too eager to go there.我太想去那里了.
3.too...to結(jié)構(gòu)的否定形式表示肯定意義,有兩種變法:
一是在too前加not,構(gòu)成not too...to,通常否定整個(gè)too...to結(jié)構(gòu)而表示肯定含義,意為"并不太……,所以能……".例如:
The article is not too difficult to translate.這篇文章并不太難,很容易翻譯.
She is not too angry to speak up.她不太生氣,能夠說(shuō)出話來(lái).
另一種方法是在不定式to do前加not,通過(guò)否定不定式而表示肯定含義,大致相當(dāng)于so...that one can,意思是"太……一定能(不可能不)……"、"太……忍不住(不免)……".例如:
He is too clever not to understand the importance of this question.=He is so clever that he can understand the importance of this question.他太聰明了,一定能(不可能不)懂得這個(gè)問(wèn)題的重要性.
She was too angry not to say what she thought.=She was so angry that she could not but say what she thought.她太氣憤了,忍不住要說(shuō)出心里的話.
