研究者稱,趙先生掌握語言的能力非常驚人,因為他能迅速地穿透一種語言的聲韻調系統,總結出一種方言乃至一種外語的規(guī)律.他還被稱為罕見的通才、一個“文藝復興式的智者”.作為與梁啟超、王國維、陳寅恪并稱于世的清華國學研究院“四大導師”,語言學是他著力最深的領域.The talent known as the Father of Chinese Linguistics speaks 33 kinds of Chinese dialects and proficients in multinational languages.The researchers claimed that Mr.Zhao has an astonishing ability in the language command since he can promptly penetrate the sound-rhythm-tune system of a language and summarize the discipline of a dialect even a kind of foreign language.He is also claimed as a rare all-round genius and the Renaissance-like Wiseman.As one of the Four Tutors in Qinghua Sinology Institution together with Liang Qichao,Wang Guowei and Chen Yinque,he makes a big contribution to the Linguistic area.

　　二戰(zhàn)后,他到法國參加會議.在巴黎車站,他對行李員講巴黎土語,對方聽了,以為他是土生土長的巴黎人,于是感嘆：“你回來了啊,現在可不如從前了,巴黎窮了.”
After World WarⅡ,he went to France to take in a meeting.In Paris bus station,the baggageman thought he was a native after the conversation with him,and said,“Finally you are back.Now it is different from previous times.Paris is poor.”
　　后來,他到德國柏林,用帶柏林口音的德語和當地人聊天.鄰居一位老人對他說：“上帝保佑,你躲過了這場災難,平平安安地回來了.”
Later,he came to Berlin Germany and used the Berlin accent German talking with the natives.An old man of the neighborhood said to him,” Thank Goodness,you missed this disaster and came back safely.”
　　1920年,英國哲學家羅素來華巡回講演,趙元任當翻譯.每到一個地方,他都用當地的方言來翻譯.他在途中向湖南人學長沙話,等到了長沙,已經能用當地話翻譯了.講演結束后,竟有人跑來和他攀老鄉(xiāng).
In 1920,the English Philosopher Russell came to China for a speech and Zhao was granted as the interpreter.In each place he had been he used the dialect for the interpretation.In the trip he learned the Changsha Dialect from a Hunan man and after the arrival at Changsha,he could already use the dialect for the interpretation.After the speech,there were unexpected natives coming to him for village fellowship.
