milk , coffee, water, rice, meat 等都是物質名詞,屬不可數名詞.
不可數名詞做主語,謂語當然用單數了.
如：There is no water in the cup.
There is a bowl of rice on the table .
析：
物質名詞不可數,所以需要一些表示量的名詞短語或形容詞來表達他們的量的多少.如,a piece of ... a cup of... 等
There is some coffee on the table, too.桌上也有一些咖啡.
some 既可修飾可數名詞,也可修飾不可數名詞.
雖然從漢語思維的角度來看,是復數；
但從英語思維的角度來看,（some） coffee 不可數,所以謂語用單數.
注意：
There are two bowls of rice on the table.
析：
主語是：two bowls of rice強調兩碗的量
或者說主語中所修飾的中心詞是bowls,所以謂語要用復數
