Belgian journalist Jo Gérard claims that potatoes were deep-fried before1680 in
the Spanish Netherlands (present-day Belgium),Meuse valley.The inhabitants there had the custom of fishing and fish frying,especially among the poor,but when the river was frozen and fishing became difficult,they cut potatoes in the form of small fish and put them in a fryer.
