I say to you today, my friends, so even though we men face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the Chinese traditions. It is time to lead the “Husband’s Civil Rights Movement!”
I have a dream that all housewives will stay home and make me dinner.
I have a dream that oppressed women with high paying jobs will be freed from the expectation of having to earn money for the family.
I have a dream that men will be free from the need to cook, except for BBQ’ing.
I have a dream that wives from suburbs and farmsteads across the land will join forces, unite to please their husbands, and get back to the kitchen!
This is our hope. This is the faith that I go back to my homeland with. With this faith we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith we will be able to transform the jangling discords in our society into a beautiful symphony of musculism. With this faith we will be able to work together, to eat together, to live together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.
Let freedom ring!
Let it ring from the suburbs of Guangzhou to the cottages of Shanghai.
Let it ring in low-income and high-income families alike.
And finally, let it ring in the form of a dinner bell, for I’m hungry, and my wife should be in the kitchen now making me dinner!
And when this happens, when we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every home, from every province and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all men, black men and white men, yellow-skinned and banana-men, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Chinese spiritual, "Free at last! free at last! thank God Almighty, we are free at last!"
