京杭大運(yùn)河,簡稱運(yùn)河,與萬里長城并列為中國古代最偉大的工程.
京杭大運(yùn)河北起北京,南至杭州,經(jīng)北京、天津及河北、山東、江蘇、浙江四省,溝通海河
、黃河、淮河、長江、錢塘江五大水系,全長1794公里.
京杭大運(yùn)河始鑿于公元前五世紀(jì)春秋末期,吳王夫差為伐齊鑿河開溝（邗溝）,至秦時蘇州至鎮(zhèn)江已能通航,以上稱為江南運(yùn)河.后經(jīng)
隋煬帝開長拓寬,直到至元二十九年（1292）年,元世祖完成了京杭運(yùn)河的全線貫通.
成為元、明、清時貫穿南北的大動脈,在交通運(yùn)輸中起著重要作用.
1949年以前只有其中一小段勉強(qiáng)維持季節(jié)通航,現(xiàn)江蘇北段的400多公里河道千噸級駁
船可暢駛長江、淮河.1981年4月,我國新開辟的古運(yùn)河無錫至揚(yáng)州、無錫至杭州的旅游線路
,引起了國外旅游者的極大興趣.
京杭大運(yùn)河是中國古代最偉大的水利工程,也是世界上最長的運(yùn)河.
