In the stories “The story of an hour” and “Lamb to The Slaughter”, both center around/focus on the theme of women living under marriage pressure. In the two stories, women took different approaches to the marriage pressure. In “The story of an hour”, Mrs. Mallard started to dream about the new life in spring. But she did not take any initiatives to change her life for the better. In the contrary, in the story “Lamb to The Slaughter”, Mrs. Maloney took actions and got her freedom by killing her husbandin the end.While the author of “The story of an hour” depicted Mrs. Mallard as a weak woman, who didn’t do anything in order to become a free women. As the story said, “She could see…..spring life” (paragraph 5) and “She breathed……the life might be long.”(Page/paragraph? 16) Mrs. Mallard dreamed about her freedom through "that window upstairs" and seemed to be satisfied with the freedom only in her dream. She did not do anything to change her life. She lived in an oppressive marriage for a long time. She tool a passive position and tried to avoid the reality. But the reality dragged her down and smashed her dream to ashes at the end.According to the story “Lamb to The Slaughter”, Mrs. Maloney also lived under the marriage pressure. But by taking actions, she had a totally different ending than Mrs. Mallard. The writer used the lamb to symbolize Mrs. Mallard, who used to be a lovely but weak wife under her husband power. She did everything for her husband. She got his slippers when he got back home, made dinner, and worked as a slave for him. But all her devotion meant nothing to her husband who now wanted a divorce. So she fought back and like “At that point……of his head. (Page/paragraph ? 27) The“weak” wife took action and killed her husband. Mrs. Maloney killed her husband for purposes of fighting back against oppression and obtaining her freedom. In the process of killing her husband, she killed her image as a weak lamb as well. In conclusion, both stories showed that women were oppressed by marriage, but it was really important as to what kind of position you take. Taking initiatives or being passive would lead to a totally different ending.
