First Chinese to corss the English Channel
In July,2004,Zhang Jian,a 37-year-old swimmer landed in Calais,France after swimming for twelve hours,He became the first Chinese ever to corss the English Channel.The 33.8-kilometre channel has attracted many swimmers because it is one of the most difficult channels to cross.
Zhang Jian set off at 1:30pm on July 29,2004.After putting some oil on his skin to help keep warm,he stepped intothe sea from Shakespeare Beach,Dover.Most of the time,Zhang swam freestyle to save energy.But he had to change his style along the way because the ocean currents changed evergysix hours and the water was so cold.During the corssing,he ate some food and had some drinks.About three hours before he landed in Calais,a British guide jumped into the sea and swam together with him.The nest day,Zhang walked onto to the French beach at last.
