The first group of 54 overweight children give a drill performance to their parents one afternoon recently as part of their graduation ceremony(典禮) in a special military（軍事的） camp. Children who take part in the camp receive military and weight-loss training, such as playing military games, visiting warships and attending weight-loss classes taught by doctors from the Longhua Hospital.
“We hope these fat children will get a good living and eating habit,” said Pang Yinshan, the managing director of the camp. “They should learn to reduce weight themselves after going back home,” Pang said,”In the past, most parents fed their only child with whatever they could afford without thinking about their weight. That is now changing.”
One of the parents said,”My son is only 12 but he is 1.57meters high and weighs 61 kg. We are afraid that Obesity(極肥胖) may make him less competitive in the society when he grows up, and also we know that obesity can cause many diseases.”He added,”In the past, we paid anything to feed our son. Now we would pay anything to keep him fit.”
The summer camp charges 590 yuan per child for six days of training, but the parents didn’t complain about the price.
One trainer said,”these children are the center of their families and are spoiled by too much care. We try to be strict with them and help them gain a strong will and self-discipline. We believe the military life here will make a good start for them.”
