有獻(xiàn)不死之藥于荊王者,謁者操以入.中射之士問曰：“可食乎?”曰：“可.”因奪而食之.王怒,使人殺中射之士.中射之士使人說王曰：“臣問謁者,謁者曰可食,臣故食之.是臣無罪,而罪在謁者也.且客獻(xiàn)不死之藥,臣食之而王殺臣,是死藥也.王殺無罪之臣,而明人之欺王.”王乃不殺.

有人給楚王獻(xiàn)長生不老的藥,傳遞人拿著藥走入宮中.有個宮中衛(wèi)士看見后問道：“這東西可以吃嗎?”答說：“是可以吃的.”衛(wèi)士于是搶過來吃了下去.楚王為此甚為惱怒,就要殺死這個衛(wèi)士.這個衛(wèi)士托人向楚王解釋說：“我問傳達(dá)人,他告訴我說是可以吃的,我才拿過藥來吃下去,這事我沒有罪,有罪的乃是傳遞人.況且客人所獻(xiàn)的是長生不死藥,我吃了藥大王就殺我,這豈不成了喪死藥.大王殺死一個沒有罪的臣子,就證明有人在欺騙大王.”楚王就放了他.
