The Balance,in astronomy,appearing during the spring.It is the seventh sign of the zodiac.The constellation consists of faint stars and is not conspicuous.It lies just west of the claws of Scorpius.The principal stars,α,β,γ,and σ,outline a four-sided figure resembling a balance with beam and pans (see illustration).See also Constellation.Line pattern of the constellation Libra.The grid lines represent the coordinates of the sky.The apparent brightness,or magnitude,of the stars is shown by the sizes of the dots,graded by appropriate numbers.
