In my opinion, the question-oriented reading should be like this. Firstly, we need to read through several classical theory works recommended by our tutors. And then, study it. During studying, we should first find out the connections between chapters or theories, or trace the evolvements of one theory, and then find the questions in the links between chapters or different forms of one theory which are in different times. Once you find a question, discuss with your tutors to make sure whether it is worth to be studied. We cannot publish a valuable thesis until a true valuable question is been found.
There are two kinds of reading: knowledge-oriented reading and question-oriented reading. As a graduate student, the latter should be paid to more attention. Since we have studied the major during the past four years in university, we would have no problems of our major in general. So what we need do in the stage of postgraduate student is to ask “why” not just to ask “what it is” as those undergraduate students always do. We cannot read purely for the purpose of reading, submerged in the sea of books. The balance between reading and thinking should be handled well.
