"too…to"和 "so…that…"這兩個句型容易混淆.
下面的句子可用兩種方式表達
I was so tired that I couldn”t move.
OR:I was too tired to move.我累得不能動.
故必須留意并熟記so與that配搭,而too是與to配拾的.此外,必須注意以下三點 ：
第一要注意的是,這兩句型所含的不同意義."so…that"有"如此程度,以致……"而 "too…to"則有"如此程度以致下…
…"的意思.故此在 "too…to"后不須再有否定字眼,若不,就有雙竽否定的情況出現(xiàn).如：
(×) The box is too small not to hold all these things.
(√) The box s too small to hold all these things.
其二要注意的是,雖然so與too都是用以表達形容詞(Adjective)與副詞(Adverb)和程度,但它們的結(jié)構(gòu)卻有別,請比較：
adj.so + + that + Clause adv.(從句) adj.too + + to + Infinitive adv.(動詞原形)
eg.(1) Helen spoke so rapidly that we could not clearly understand her.Helen spoke too rapidly for us
too understand.(2) Mark was so angry that he could not speak.Mark was too angry to speak.
第三點,就是若 "so …that…" 句型中的從句 (Sub-ordinate clause)中的主語(Subject)與主句(Main
clause)中的不,改用 "too…to…"句型表達時,我們可以將for + Noun/Pronoun結(jié)構(gòu)用在to +
infinitive之前.請看下面的分析：eg.(1) The question was so difficult that we could not answer it.
(從句中的Subject為 "we" ,而主句的Subject為 "The question".) = The question was too difficult for us to
answer.(注意 "it"不用寫.) (2) Eddie ran so quickly that we could not catch up with him.(從句的Subject為
"we"而主句中的Subject為Eddie".) = Eddie ran too quickly for us to catch up (注意 "him"不用寫.)
