Before the Harry Potter books were written,the most famous wizard was Merlin,who became a friend of the legendary English King Arthur.Before he met Arthur,however,he worked for a king called Vortigen.
King Vortigen tried to build a stone wall around his castle,but the wall kept falling down.Joram,the king's wizard,said” To make the wall stay up,mix blood from the heart of an orphan with the stones of the wall."
The King sent soldiers to find such an orphan.They found a ten-year-old boy calld Merlin.When King Vortigen showed him the wall,Merlin said,"The wall is falling down because there are two dragons in the water that fight every night.The waves they make cause the wall to fall down."
The king ordered his soldiers to dig until they found the dragons,and then kill them.This they did,and the next time the king built a wall it did not fall down.The king was so grateful to Merlin that he did not mix blood from his heart with the stones for the wall.Instead he cut off the head of the wizard Joram for suggesting he do such a thing!
