According to a new survey, coming in third is better than being second. This is all to do with an interesting phenomenon called “counterfactual thinking*” or “what might have been.” Researchers watched medal ceremonies at many Winter and Summer Olympics, and compared the satisfaction of bronze medal winners with that of silver medalist according to their facial expressions.
“On average, bronze medalists are happier than silver medalists,” said a researcher. “Some athletes perform better, but in fact, they feel worse than those who didn’t do as well as them.”
Third-place winners tend to have upward thoughts— “at least I won a prize.” That will make them happy. However, those who come in second tend to have downward thoughts —“if only I could ...” That will make them unhappy. In addition, expectations from teammates and fans also have some impact on an athlete’s sense of disappointment.
