世有伯樂,然后有千里馬.千里馬常有,而伯樂不常有.故雖有名馬,只（zhǐ）辱于奴隸人之手,駢（pián）死于槽（cáo）櫪（lì）之間,不以千里稱也.
馬之千里者,一食（shí）或盡粟（sù）一石（dàn,古音為shí）.食（sì）馬者不知其能千里而食（sì）也.是馬也,雖有千里之能,食（shí）不飽,力不足,才美不外見（xiàn）,且欲與常馬等不可得,安求其能千里也?
策之不以其道,食（sì）之不能盡其材,鳴之而不能通其意,執(zhí)策而臨之,曰：“天下無馬!”嗚呼!其真無馬邪（yé）?其真不知馬也.

世界上有了伯樂,然后才會(huì)有千里馬.千里馬經(jīng)常有,但伯樂不是經(jīng)常有.因而即使有了千里馬,也只是屈辱地被埋沒在平凡馬夫的手里,和普通馬一同死在馬廄里,不能以千里馬的名聲讓世人了解.
能日行千里的馬,吃一頓有時(shí)能吃完一石糧食.飼養(yǎng)馬的人不知道它能日行千里把它當(dāng)普通馬來喂養(yǎng).這樣的馬,雖然有日行千里的才能,但因吃不飽,而力不足,才能和優(yōu)點(diǎn)不能顯現(xiàn)出來,想要和平常馬一樣尚且辦不到,怎么能夠要求它日行千里呢?
不用駕馭千里馬的正確方法來駕馭它,沒有按照千里馬的食量來喂飽它從而發(fā)揮它的才能,不能明白它鳴叫的意思,拿起馬鞭面對(duì)千里馬說：“天下沒有千里馬!”唉!難道真的沒有千里馬嗎?恐怕是不識(shí)千里馬吧!
